Ecological crisis and crisis of modernity*In this book, Bruno Latour starts from a central observation: our current ways of thinking are no longer adapted to the material reality of the Earth. “Globalist” visions — which imagine abstract citizens living in a homogeneous environment, and “localist” — where citizens are attached to a sovereign national authority, do not make it possible to understand our concrete and material interdependencies with the Earth, which condition our existence.In Face à Gaïa, Bruno Latour shows that the climate crisis challenges our modern thinking paradigm, based on a separation between nature and human society.. This model assumed a neutral and passive Earth, completely disassociated from human actions. However, this ecological crisis reveals that it actually reacts to our activity. By speaking of “Gaïa”, the author refers precisely to this system of complex and multiple interactions that makes life on Earth possible: according to him, it is no longer a simple abstract setting, but an active condition of our existence, with which we must deal. Bruno Latour thus affirms that the ecological crisis we are going through is fundamentally political. The latter implies a profound change in our mentalities and our political frameworks: it is a question of recognizing our material attachments to the Earth in order to consider ourselves as beings whose subsistence depends on multiple attachment links, and of inscribing our actions in accordance with the material and environmental realities on which our existence depends. h4.
